Random Question: Failure Threshold

Basically, I'm wondering what people's ideas are on failure thresholds. How many times, in essence, does an attempt need to fail for something to be decided to be a lost cause ( Read more... )

I have a three-step process:

1) What is "success"? I paint/draw lots of really crappy paintings and drawings when I'm actually in practice with my art. I just never show them to anyone. Even if I never produced something I would show to anyone, just doing the art is a success.

2) How important is it? If it's the $15 tea kettle that showed up broken, eh, I'll write a bad review on amazon and not really care that no one ever got back to me. If its a $2,000 bedroom set I'll try harder.

3) If I continue to fail and it's a battle worth fighting, I try another approach. Which usually, for me, means research, followed by experimentation. What is the chemistry of a souffle? Are there other people working at that company I haven't contacted yet? What genres of painting haven't I explored? Perhaps I'm a color-theorist or expressionist, rather than a landscape painter. What art are other people doing that I'd like mine to look like? Are they teaching classes? What mediums haven't I tried yet?

Then again, if I decided I want to be I'm really, really stubborn, and have worked enough in customer service to know how to make myself a real pain. Most of the time I'm chill and laid back, but sometimes I buy $100 worth of academic-style books off Amazon, hole up for a weekend with a highlighter, scratch paper and Google and come out with, for example, a non-fallen souffle.

I do like that approach, and do try to use different methods. But, sometimes, all things being equal, chances just aren't that good. Eventually, you reach a point where, for instance, you just say, "Okay, an equally geared and skilled warlock is just going to eat my feral druid in PvP." Doesn't mean that you're not going to get lucky from time to time, but it does mean I'm not going to seek them out spamming /duel. ::shrugs::
