Writing: Details

I'm going to need to set up an icon for this stuff, eventually.

The devil is, as they say, in the details. I'm at the point where some of the main concepts are set, but now I need to narrow it down - in part, because that's going to influence where the story goes. The whole Star Wars saga would've gone differently if, say, there were 50 Sith, as opposed to just Darth Maul and Darth Sidious. (Likewise, if the Rebellion were just Luke & Leia, it would've gone differently too.)

The problem isn't coming up with an answer - it's picking the one that fits, because it has so many effects on the later story. One Sith master and one apprentice can't take out the Jedi in a straight confrontation - you can assassinate a number of them (especially if they look like accidents), but that will just whittle away their power. Likewise, to pull off the heroic assault on the Death Star, you need a fleet of ships - but not so big that the Rebels can pull it off without a problem.

It's all a question of balance, and finding out where the story is going to go. If I pick a route for the story, then the details will fill in. But, on the flip side, I need to have enough details set to make sure that the route makes sense in the world. For instance, if your Sooper-Weapons are rare, a raid to steal some is more difficult - the Rebels aren't going to be able to sneak in and make off with a few crates of light-sabers. However, regular weapons (like everybody's favorite blaster rifles) are likely to be stockpiled, so....

::shrugs:: Part of it is determining the power levels of the two sides. I mean, I know one side is outmatched and outgunned. Straight-on confrontation isn't an option. Even the occasional raids are risk as all hell, even in ambush. But I need to give them a fighting chance....
