Writing again

I'm writing again. Or, well, will be, once I'm done world-building. I've scrapped so much of the crap that I'd written when I was younger - enough such that you can't honestly claim that it's the same story. ::nods:: There's certainly some unfolding going on, but I'm concerned about breaking my own internal rules. I don't want a critical part of the struggle to be based on something that I later decide simply can't work that way, so I'm trying to hammer out the rules ahead of time, instead of doing them on the fly. Once I've got some more of that, I think I'll be able to work out how the struggle goes down on a more zoomed-in manner.

Yeah, there's a lot that I want to play with... "different" means it's got a chance of catching folks' attention more, but different for difference's sake won't cut it. Nor do I want characters running around in cotton tunics if robes make more sense - or if cotton is better reserved for their Sunday Best. Assuming that it's appropriate for them to wear their best for religious days, that they've got a day a week set aside for such observances, or even that they measure time in weeks.

Understanding their way of life means that I can write them realistically, so I can understand what the people value, how the leaders would act... which makes it more believable.
