I'm writing again. Or, well, will be, once I'm done world-building. I've scrapped so much of the crap that I'd written when I was younger - enough such that you can't honestly claim that it's the same story. More accurate to say that I've salvaged a couple of bits, but am otherwise starting from scratch

Yeah, there's a lot that I want to play with... "different" means it's got a chance of catching folks' attention more, but different for difference's sake won't cut it. Nor do I want characters running around in cotton tunics if robes make more sense - or if cotton is better reserved for their Sunday Best. Assuming that it's appropriate for them to wear their best for religious days, that they've got a day a week set aside for such observances, or even that they measure time in weeks.
Understanding their way of life means that I can write them realistically, so I can understand what the people value, how the leaders would act... which makes it more believable.
