The stunt at the airport buys the boys six months of probation, and of course, sensible Sou can't turn down the reduced price of an apartment shared amongst three.
While Yuki is no longer in constant danger of abduction, in reality this frees her up to contribute to and participate in schemes with Maruo to spy on and interefere in everything Sou.
Although Sou catches them every time, it's a win-win for the duo, as it either ends in the stoic detective opening up to them a little, or they get to add more material to their magazine of humiliation ammunition.
It's terrifying how much Maruo and Yuki are on the same wavelength, sometimes.
In a fit of spite and insecurity one day, with Sou being even more hands-off than usual, Yuki forces a mortified Maruo to take her to one of his match-making parties.
They end up ditching the party and spying on Sou again.
Seeing Sou's panicked face whenever witnessing them being in the same room as his mother, sister, and Nakatani-kun is adorable, and kind of addicting.
Three more attempted airports and a year and a half of probation later, Sou finally catches on and pays Horikawa to drive him to his flight in the dead of night while the other two sleep.
Thanks to a tipoff from the sentimental-to-tears Maki, Sou is waylaid at the airport by his mother, sister, and of course the ever enthusiastic Nakatani-kun, their combined hysterics and guilt-tripping enough to make him to miss his flight.
It's not enough to land him in probation, though, so three days later Sou makes another airport attempt, only to be delayed in traffic by a motocycle gang gumming up the intersection.
Shige is jailed overnight for the stunt and Maruo limps for days afterwards.
It's a wake-up call to them all that despite any affection Sou had for them, their preventing his return to America might squander his good will, and so with a heavy heart Sou's roommates watch him go through airport security and do nothing.
