U.S. authorities arrested Shahzad Faisal, a 30-year-old male and U.S. citizen of Pakistani descent, at New York’s JFK International airport overnight on May 4. Faisal was arrested for his suspected role in the Times Square attempted bombing on May 1. Faisal was attempting to flee (to Dubai) when he was arrested by the airport’s customs and border guard agents due to suspicion of his involvement in the attempted attack. Faisal reportedly traveled to Pakistan before the attack was carried out. These details along with a claim of responsibility by the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) (although it was later retracted) seem to indicate that Faisal might have been acting on behalf of a faction of Pakistani militants. However, the construction of the bomb (i.e., it’s failure to detonate and the use of fireworks - a very amateur move) and the method of carrying out the attack (such as Faisal’s apparent unwillingness to carry out a suicide attack) indicate that Faisal received poor training - if any at all. Police are now likely assessing details on Faisal’s trip to Pakistan and any communications that he may have had with people there. These details, which will soon be released, will likely reveal the scope of any Pakistani militant involvement in the May 1 Times Square attempted bombing. STRATFOR will continue to monitor the situation to see if he was acting alone or if there are accomplices in New York.
