I wouldn't go to some of the nastier US locations (such as Detroit) even with armed friends for company. Why go to an even nastier place unarmed, without even tenuous legal protections? I wonder, what happens if Russia goes through another internal spasm and traps the visitors within, as they had done in the past...

Invite them here, if possible.

Personally, my trip to a location like Russia would include scavenging for a IIA vest, a PSM and something for the main sidearm, plus keeping a low profile. That's why I am not keen about invitations to Taiwan and mainland China from friends...those places are even weirder than Russia, proper tools are harder to ome by, especially since I don't speak Chinese yet. In practice, this limits my travels to about thirty states in the US where I expect to remain unmolested by authorities and other locals. Had gone to Germany, but not without misgivings.

А как насчет - отказаться от серпастого и ездить по визе? Я вот такой вариант рассматриваю.

Actually it's not that bad in Detroit. reytsman April 6 2006, 21:45:14 UTC
Hey, Detroit is pretty safe. Just don't wonder too much out of the downtown area. But area around Detroit casinos is a lot safer than most of the country. Come and visit. :)
Just don't visit schools metal detectors at the entrance and being the only white person in the building can be a little unsettling.

One of my friends teaches in Detroit. She's had to cut students off herself to stay alive. A small female has to use weapons to even out the odds against large, psycho teenagers.

Memphis and Detroit give me the same feeling: "We should have brought rifles." I don't go to either place, given a choice. If I ever do again, I will bring rifles. The cities are severely creepy, giving me a strong premonition of trouble.

At least, one can take precautions in the US. Getting armor and arms in St.P would be harder.

Keyword is "teaching". I've been to one of those schools (once) I would not go there by myself again even in full aromor with an assalt riffle. Place gives you unrealistic feeling metal detectors at the school entrance seemed exessive, until latter one of the guys working in a Detroit cafe couldn't believe that we actually visited that school.
Downtown is not that bad you have a small area by the river and the Renesance Center and than by the casions, if you stay within that area you wouldn't believe what the Detroit schools are like.
