The party was stifling with over pretentiousness; nobles flocking to Father and I like a herd of sheep. I was sorely tempted to cry wolf in hopes that one would come and rip them from limb to limb. They were nothing but a cluster of selfish mongrels; their only desire to climb the social ladder. Pathetic.
I raised a bored hand to yet again shoo another away. I was unapproachable. I had no time to endure their fraudulent praises. If I was forced to attend these atrocious balls, I would do so sitting upon my throne and drinking fine wine.
How people found these events to be gay and enriching was far beyond me. Shuffling around the room with gumptious women to deafening music was certainly not my idea of a good time. I much preferred the quiet of the wilderness and the steady beat of my horse beneath my hips.
Oh for sure I know how they gossip of me! How they dare speak of their heir to the throne! The ‘ice’ prince. It should frustrate me but it does not. Shallow, inconsiderate people. If only they truly took the time to get to know me, perhaps, it would change their perception.
My fingers unwillingly tap to the beat of the band as my eyes scan the length of the ballroom. It is the same old, same old; fake smiles, swooning women, and drunk men. A disgusted scoff escapes my lips as I continue to observe my surroundings.
And then, she is there; like a breath of fresh air to my oxygen starved lungs. She shines brightly, brighter than any sole person here. I must approach her.
“Excuse me, could you check my jacket?” My voice rings clear with authority. She turns and smiles and it is so stunning, I cannot help but return it. “I believe you littered me with some dust as you fell from the sky.”
She arches a perfect eyebrow before daintily covering her mouth and stifling a giggle.“I beg your pardon, highness?”
“You are a fallen star, yes?” I offer her my arm and she takes it. I had this sudden urge to dance with her. “I have never seen a woman shine so brightly. Surely, you must be from the heavens; an angel perhaps?”
This time, she does not hold back but laughs gaily as I twist her around the ball room. “I assure you sire, I am only a woman falling in love.”
Was this the woman to finally melt my frozen heart?
“The Elders say there is nothing more beautiful than a woman in love.”
“And what say you, highness?”
Softly, I caress her blushing cheeks. “I believe there is nothing more beautiful than you, my fallen star.”
