“When did it get this cold?” Steph asked from her sleeping bag. Her voice was tight and tense from the chill.
“It’s only going to get worse…” Roy said and gave her an apologetic grimace. She couldn’t see it. The cabin was pitch black. The moon had set hours ago and only dim starlight streamed in through the single long window at the side wall.
“What are the chances of putting a fire in that thing?” Steph asked and Roy assumed she was gesturing to the wood burning stove in the middle of the cabin.
“Pretty much nil,” he answered and heard her sigh.
“Nothing for it, then,” she said resignedly and Roy heard rustling sounds as Steph struggled out of her bag.
He saw her silhouette as she stood and then he heard the bag unzip. She dropped it on top of him and grabbed her pillow, walking over to his cot.
“Move over,” she said and began to climb in with him.
Roy’s shock at her actions kept him from making any comment as she struggled inside his bag. There was not enough room for her to lay next to him, so she had to settle on top of him, her head pillowed on his chest. After the initial discomfiture had past and they better situated themselves, Roy had to admit, it was much warmer.
Her chest was pressed to his and her breath warmed his neck. Her legs were tucked between his own and her arms came around his sides.
Steph gave a contented sigh and nuzzled her face into his shoulder.
“Mmm, you’re warm,” she said happily and rubbed her feet along his legs, using the friction to warm them.
Roy wrapped both arms around her and pressed his cold face against her soft hair.
“You are too,” her murmured, but she was already asleep.
A fire probably would have been a much more long term solution to their problems, but Roy liked this one more.
