The Rabbit Hole
A pop sounded loudly in Tim’s ears and suddenly, rather than standing half naked in his bedroom, he was in the middle of what had to be one of Zachary Zatara’s dressings room. There were magic implements scattered all over the room. A vase of roses sat on the illuminated make up table. Chairs and side tables were covered in bits and pieces of Zatara’s tux and his top hat sat rakishly atop the mirror.
It was clear by all the items scattered around that Zat was, in fact, here. He wouldn’t leave without his top hat, after all. Tim glanced around for a few moments, looking for him. When he was not immediately visible Tim shrugged and pulled on the t-shirt he had been about to put on when he was transported.
Zat had transported him while he was changing into his pajamas. Tim could only be relieved that Zat hadn’t called for him a few minutes earlier or he would have been naked and dripping wet from his shower. It raised the question of why Zat hadn’t used their communicators to see what Tim had been up to before he just zapped him over here.
“Zat!” Tim called out looking more intently around the room.
“Over here!” Zatara called from off to Tim’s left. His voice was muffled and slightly strained.
Tim headed over in the direction Zat’s voice had come from. Tim skirted a large wooden screen that divided the dressing room in two. On the other side was a wall partially draped with a long white section of cloth. The portion of the wall that was not obscured by the cloth had a large hole in it. Scaffolding was built up all around the hole in the wall. Wires, pipes and support beams were clearly visible through the hole.
So too, was Zachary Zatara’s scantily clad bottom.
Zat was standing on his tip toes, leaning into the hole in the wall. His bottom waved in the air as he struggled briefly and Tim couldn’t help but be reminded of Pooh Bear.
Zatara was, as was his habit after a show, wearing nothing but a pair of blue boxer briefs. The thin cotton fabric fit snuggly to Zatara’s thighs and bottom. Tim bit his lip in an effort not to laugh.
“Uh, Zat?” Tim called to his friend and he approached him from behind, appreciatively taking in the truly excellent bottom that was displayed to perfection at the moment.
“Thank god. I thought the spell took, but way too much blood has rushed to my brain for me to be sure about anything at the moment,” Zatara babbled and his butt wriggled again as he spoke.
“So… why don’t you come out?” Tim suggested hesitantly, tilting his head and smirking slightly as he watched the butt wriggles.
“I can’t. I’m stuck. That’s why I brought you here!” Zatara exclaimed exasperatedly, punctuating each sentence with another vigorous butt wriggle. “Trained by the World’s Greatest Detective, were you?”
Tim leaned one shoulder against the wall next to where Zatara was sticking out and crossed his arms over his chest.
“Why don’t you just magic yourself out?” Tim asked casually.
Zatara sighed as heavily as he could manage in that position. “I can’t. I have Bunny and she’s hurt. I can’t magic us both out at the same time and I can’t put her down anywhere in here.”
Tim sobered slightly. Zat was terribly fond of his rabbit. She wasn’t just a prop for his shows, she was his pet and his friend. Tim had often heard Zat talking to Bunny very seriously several times.
“Is Bunny ok?” he asked.
“I think her leg is hurt. She was exploring after the show and I heard her scream when she fell into the hole. I came over to pull her out but I couldn’t without hurting her. I’ll explain everything after you get us out of here,” Zat said and now Tim could hear the worry and strain in Zatara’s voice.
“Alright, what do you need me to do?” he asked and stepped in close to Zat.
“I can’t use my arms to lift myself and not enough of my feet are touching the ground for me to get the leverage I need to get out of here. I need you to lift me up and pull me back. Carefully and slowly,” Zatara explained.
Tim nodded and followed Zatara’s instructions to the letter. It wasn’t long before all three of them were sitting on the floor of the dressing room, trying hard to catch their respective breaths.
Tim pulled out his cell phone and found the nearest animal hospital. He let them know to expect them. Four hours and one Bunny-leg-cast later they were back in Zatara’s hotel room, yawing widely and stumbling over the carpet.
Tim put Bunny in her cage with a full food bowl and a few carrots for good measure. When Bunny was tucked safe away Tim walked back over to where Zat was standing numbly in the middle of the room.
“I don’t think I have the energy left to send you home tonight Tim,” Zat admitted as he toed off his shoes and flopped onto the bed. Tim fell onto it next to Zat and curled against his side.
“I didn’t expect that you would,” Tim responded easily and pressed his face against Zat’s throat and breathed in deeply. They both lay there quietly for a few moments as Bunny nibbled his carrots off in the corner.
“When I heard her scream like that I-“ Zatara began and broke off thickly. “I just panicked. I know I should have used magic to get her out in the first place but all I could think about was holding her and making sure she was safe.”
Tim curled in close to Zatara and wrapped an arm around his chest, hugging him comfortingly. “She’s alright and that’s all that matters,” Tim answered.
“I didn’t say thank you, yet. For today, I mean,” Zatara said softly, wrapping his arms around Tim’s shoulder and pulling him in even closer.
“Mmm, you know I’ll always be there if you need me, Z,” Tim assured him.
Zat tilted his head down to face Tim and smiled at him.
“My hero,” he murmured and kissed Tim softly on the mouth.
“Always,” Tim promised and kissed him back. “For you and Bunny.”
