Let's Talk About Plagiarism

Mar 03, 2015 10:00

Hello arashirabu members! Apologies for two mod posts back to back, but I wanted to highlight an important issue with the community.

Every now and then we get a request on our master request post for fics written by tsunderellasays, who was active in fandom for some time before deleting their journal and disappearing. What most people do not seem to know is ( Read more... )

Oh gosh. Now that you mention it. I remember someone who posted this 'From SS with love fic' (or something to that effect), that was totally copied right out from another fanfic in AO3. Totally, utterly disgraceful. After she was busted, she just deleted her account. I wonder if it's the same person?

Anyway I'm really glad that you are posting and clarifying this. A lot of people probably didn't know any better! Hopefully we won't see a repeat of this any soon!

Oh yes! I think that was another person, but I get requests for them too sometimes. I remember that one because they kept the pictures from the story they stole from, so an Arashi story had pictures from Supernatural in it! LOL

Definitely thought it was time to clear up what is okay and not when it comes to this sort of thing. Ugh, it's always heartbreaking when a really good story ends up being stolen.

hahaha! I didn't know where the fic was from at first, or the fandom, don't know about supernatural... the story was good (duh!) but it was really extremely weird as an Arashi fanfic. Then someone busted her! It's like. Yappari! I knew something was off with that fic!

I can't understand such a behaviour, i'm also a writer in my own language (french) and where is the fun ? Where is the fun to create, and the pleasure of writing ? Despite being an asshole for stealing the work of somebody who puts his ideas and time in a story, where is the pleasure ?

Is this for having readers? For the satisfaction of having a feed back on something ? But what does those comments and appreciations mean if it's not really for you but for the person who wrote it first. If you know that it is not yours how can you be happy about it ?
I just can't understand how somebody can be disrespectful against the others and themselves

Stealing a fiction from somebody, it has no meaning...no sense

agreed! I don't know what sort of purpose they'll get out of it. Self deceived satisfaction?

What I've been thinking about. There are things like this too in Fanf*****n and many more. Some of them kept making stories similar or even exactly the same as the original authors. That's why I got confused and ended checking if that author was the same author or that was actually plagiarism. This is actually the first time I heard of plagiarism in LiveJournal since I am still newbie here. But it seems it is always plagiarism in every site. I'm sad that they proudly claim those works as theirs when the authors work hard to write those precious fics. They might be only a fiction but for us they are our world too! Authors build it from scratch word by word.

Authors really do put a lot of heart and hard work into their stories! Which brings up another point (that even I am bad about following sometimes) - we should all be commenting more when we read! :)

that's such a shame >< they didn't even apologize ><
but I have a question, I'm currently writting a sakumoto fic based on a book, is it plagiarism? I did mention it was based on a book but I don't want to be accused of plagiarism because I took the story and wrote a sakumoto version xD if you consider it as a plagia, I will delete it right away, I don't want to steal people's work :)

Nope, you're fine! :) I've seen your posts and from what I can tell, you are not copying the book word for word and just changing the names. You're making your own, new version of the story. And you even credited the book you were inspired by, which is more than most people would do. That's the right thing! :D

Thanks for asking! Hopefully other people understand that as well. Don't want to scare anyone. lol
