And so the days that flew by were painfilled days. He locked himself deep under, so deep that he wouldn't see the boats that passed above. They reminded him of that one man that had done the impossible.

It was only on a whim that one week later, Kazunari swam to the top for a change of setting.

He did it during the day, sure that the nightly visitor wouldn't be there, and saw a shadow anchored in the dead center of his territory reminiscent of that magical night. There were no fishing lines. Instead, as Kazunari watched, he saw petals being scattered onto the water's surface.

Fearing the uncanny change, Kazunari quickly ducked and swam back to his cave.

However, the next day, he went to the top again out of curiosity and again, saw the boat in it's former position. A new flower was being thrown. It was as beautiful as the one from yesterday.

Prepared this time, he reached out and grasped one, bringing it in under water for a closer view. The petal was a vibrant yellow, presenting the sun, the land, and all the promises beyond the water. Of course, these flowers were meant only for him.

As Kazunari watched the petal sway, he heard a familiar voice from above. "I want to see you again. I miss you," Satoshi said from the edge of his boat's deck, peering over into the obscure waters of the ocean.

With just that one sound, the mermaid suffered. He clutched the petal to his heart and knew that only a few feet distanced him from that sparkling dream, but he could not do it. In an attempt to stop himself, he turned and swam back to his cave, the lovely voice and its human words echoing in his mind.

But as he reached the interior, his chest clenched and his breathing became ragged. He almost couldn't breathe as his heart tore itself in half. Kazunari opened his palm and saw the petal he had held so tightly shrivel. It floated out of his hand and faded into the darkness around him.

The sight was the final peak that was his breaking point.

Kazunari burst into helpless tears and gasped, remembering the face of the person he had fallen in love with at first sight and the voice that had captured him. His tears were engulfed by the water and were unapparent, but they blinded him until he couldn't see, and Kazunari had to close his eyes. In the darkness, he saw the fisherman's face and all the faces of his friends who had left him with smiles.

They had spoken of love, happiness, and completion.

While Kazunari wept, he realized at last that he was wrong.

That night, he swam back to the top and looked for the shadow of a boat above him. It was still there, anchored in the middle of his territory. The flowers from earlier were now gone, swept away by the tide. In their place were small lighted lamps. They were made of paper and from their center, a single candle burned.

Kazunari broke the surface of the water to watch and he saw that a drawing of a man marked the paper lanterns: they were of him.

In the distance, Satoshi sat crouched over on deck alone and he slowly set another lamp out. In the darkness, it joined the sea of brightly glowing lanterns. Their small but easily extinguished life continued to flicker, as if calling for that one person the fisherman desperately wanted to see.

In that one scene, Kazunari saw the soul of the man he had fallen in love, and it was so pure, so bright, that his emotions overwhelmed him. He knew as he dipped his head and swam towards the boat, that he was not making the wrong decision. No matter the number of times this moment replayed, Kazunari would always move forward.

Up on deck, Satoshi had heard the splash of his tail. He looked up and around the vast ocean, wondering if his mind had just conjured the noise. It was silent and still. Disappointed, he reached for another lamp.

In one sudden motion, Kazunari's arm broke the surface of the water right before his position. Satoshi was unprepared for what would happen next. The following second, his front was gripped tightly and he was hauled under water.

In shock, he panicked while his vision cleared and he fought for air, but Kazunari suddenly closed the distance between them with a kiss. The mermaid gave Satoshi breath, locking their lips together and breathing for the two of them. His arms went around the human's neck, calming the human while holding them together.

It was Kazunari, Satoshi knew. It was the being he had desperately been seeking in the last week, and the realization caused his heart to pound. He had found the being at last.

But then even though Satoshi stilled and returned Kazunari's kiss, he was not content to stay under water. He wanted to be on land, or at least a place with something solid underneath him. He had to return to the boat.

Decisively, he grabbed Kazunari by the shoulders and forcefully pushed the mermaid back. Satoshi broke the surface of the water, gasping for air, and climbed unto the deck. The fisherman quickly turned to find Kazunari and was relieved to see the mermaid pull himself on deck behind him. As soon as the creature's tail touched the air, it transformed into slender legs.

He paused at the magic and sight of the nakedness, but Kazunari did not wait for him to get over it. The former mermaid immediately reached for the human. In the awkwardness of using his new limbs, he fell. Immediately, the latter caught him just before he hit the deck and in one instant, turned them over so that the smaller man was trapped underneath him. Then he quickly worked at removing his soaked clothing.

Looking up at him rush but still impatient, Kazunari wailed.

The fisherman glanced down at him and though he did not stop pulling off his pants, he smiled at the endearing sound. In a few more seconds, he was finally bare and conclusively leaned down for another kiss.

Kazunari moved against him, wanting more and not knowing the human words to convey it. He encircled his arms around Satoshi, drawing the man closer. Their tongues tangled and overlapped, seeking each other. When the fisherman suddenly broke the contact, he whined again, and the older man stifled a giggle against his neck, a sound which Kazunari would've liked to have heard.

But the former mermaid quickly forgot his regret as the fisherman's hands and lips traveled down his torso instead. He panted, burning and eager under the other's ministrations, and another human part of himself that had come with his limbs hardened painfully in the process.

Kazunari moaned when Satoshi's mouth stopped at his nipple and nipped at the tip. Subsequently, he started squirming from anticipation when the fisherman found his shaft and wrapped a hand around it. With his other hand, Satoshi drew the smaller man's legs apart and inserted himself in between.

The former mermaid bucked his hips impatiently, feeling the heat that raged inside his gut uncontrollable. He reached out to grab Satoshi's other hand and led it to join the first at his throbbing length. He continued to gasp and whine as he looked up to meet Satoshi's eyes with his own hungry ones. As their gazes met, a soft, loving smile spread across the fisherman's lust filled face. The sight was so breathtaking, the sound between a moan and sob erupted from the back of Kazunari's throat.

The older man took charge then, rubbing the tip of Kazunari's length but pulling his other hand free. He glanced around the deck, found his toolbox, and took out the sunscreen. Kazunari watched in a haze as Satoshi flipped up the cap and spilled some of the contents unto his fingers.

And then with one sharp motion, the smaller man found his legs lifted off the ground and his ass in the air. Two fingers penetrated him all at once. Through the sounds of his own moans and the rush of blood in his body, through the pounding of his heart, Kazunari felt Satoshi lean forward to whisper into his ear, speaking for the first time that night. "I'm Satoshi. Ohno Satoshi." And while he scissored his fingers before adding in a third, Satoshi continued to repeat his name over and over, as if he were chanting.

Kazunari clutched the older man's shoulders and stared up at the him through half-lidded eyes. "Sa...toshi..." the mermaid followed. When he saw the latter's eyes mist over, he knew he had done the right thing. "Sa..toshi..." he said again, and that one word, his first verbal word, engraved itself into his heart. Kazunari continued to repeat it, gasping for breath, but refusing to stop saying the name knowing that it made Satoshi and himself happy.

In that moment of overwhelming affection, the fisherman finally drew his fingers out. He leaned down to place a small kiss on the smaller man's mouth, before drawing Kazunari's legs further apart and positioning his hard erection at the man's prepared virgin hole.

He paused before he, without warning, surged forward with all the strength in his lean body and entered.
Though there was a slight pain from the feel of himself stretching, Kazunari cried out from the indescribable pleasure. His hands flew up to clutch Satoshi's arms that held him in place and he found his own legs tightening around the latter's waist as the man rocked deeper into him.

"Satoshi," Kazunari found himself calling repeatedly, and with his every breath, the older man thrust into him.

They became one, the heat burning inside their bodies bursting into flames and intensifying with each moment Satoshi shoved himself in. They perspired and panted, the sounds of their slick and bare bodies lapping against each other in a rhythm. Their sweat and scents mingled until even there, they became one. Kazunari's calls and moans, Satoshi's grunts, penetrated the silence around them until the final eruption when the both of them finally fell over the edge together with a cry and a sigh.

Satoshi squeezed his eyes shut in ecstasy, loving the feel of Kazunari clenching around him as he released his seeds into the smaller man's hole. Simultaneously, Kazunari spilled unto his stomach.

Exhausted, the older man finally pulled himself out and lay beside the latter as they tried to regain their breaths. The solid deck that had warmed beneath them from their lovemaking felt reassuring against their back as they stared up at the vast star studded sky above them.

The sky was a divine chasm, beautiful and yet so wide and neverending. A being would become lost in that infinite world. Satoshi sought Kazunari's hand in the almost darkness, hoping that the person had not disappeared. He feared the loss as much as he feared being lost in that world above him. He could not turn to look at the love of his life as he whispered in a broken whisper and half sob, "Please, don't leave me."

Beside him, Kazunari did not understand those human words, but he knew that voice and he could feel the emotions that accompanied those musical tones. In response, he turned on his side and buried his head in the other man's neck. The world would have to end before he tore himself from this person.

When Satoshi stifled yet another sound, this time a shout of happiness that again Kazunari would've liked to hear, and turned to embrace him, the former mermaid knew he had performed the right answer.

Even if they had obstacles to face together in the future, in the end Kazunari had found his true home in Ohno Satoshi's arms. This time, he would definitely never leave.

I loved how it captured both the magical atomsphere while still being realistic in other terms, with the language barrier and such. It had a good fairytale/storybook kind of feel to it as well which suited the mermaid sitaution well.

Really enjoyed reading it, so thanks for writing it!! :D *praises you along with everyone else*
