Dr. Sleepless

This is one of the better openings I've read in a comic book. Dr. Sleepless #7... sums up the situation pretty nicely, I think.

I've got some numbers for you.
There are seven billion people on earth.
Three hundred people born every minute. Thirty of those will have been born to a teenager.
Sixteen of that three hundred will die before the age of five.
And one of those mothers will die in childbirth. That's forty thousand dead mothers a month.
A thousand people die every ten minutes.
So far this year, the death rate is just barely ahead of the number of cars manufactured.
Sixty thousand books are published a month, but almost a billion people went to the movies.
We've generated nearly two billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions this month, but life on earth has only produced eight million tons of shit.
Much of which people probably went to see at the movies.
Seven hundred thousand hectares of forest were lost in that month. And twelve hundred people died of pesticide poisoning.
Is that the future you were expecting?
In one month, twenty thousand people get killed by cars, seventy thousand people die of malaria, four hundred thousand people die of cancer and two million people die of HIV-related consequence.
In the last five minutes, two hundred people died of hunger.
In the last five minutes, Americans spend two hundred and seventy thousand dollars on dieting products.
In the last month, three hundred billion liters of water were drunk-- but four hundred thousand people died from waterborne disease.
In fact, right now, here in the future, almost one and a half billion people still don't have access to clean water.
The sun's coming up soon.
Those of you who can hear me will be going to bed soon. And when you do, I want you to think about this before you sleep:
What can you do to bring around the real future?
Because you know that this isn't a future worth getting out of bed for.
What can you do to burn down this fake life we're trapped in?
We now return you to this hideous soul-crushing life they built around you while you were sleeping.
