The original X-Com game is available on Steam now! It's bad and wrong for me to be excited about this... but... if I'm going to be carting the laptop up to my parents' anyway... :)

I love the game so much I have been keeping an old 486 laptop just to run it every now and again!

I was told that there was some feature which became a problem in the way it had been written so on faster processors it ran as fast as it could when on the home screen so you couldn't do anything in time. Did they resolve that in this release? Forgive me if I am asking a stupid question, I know nothing of Steam

Yes, the earth view was almost unusable because every time you clicked one of the rotate buttons, the globe would spin like mad: they didn't put any speed control in there because the machines at the time presumably went flat out just getting it done at all!

Steam is the delivery system Valve produced for Half-Life 2. It's a downloadable client that allows you to buy games through them and then the client automatically downloads them and receives patches etc. Some people love it, some people hate it. I believe that just X-Com: UFO Defense is £2.99, and the package of all the X-Com games up to Apocalypse and Interceptor is £6.99.

And yes, the geoscape screen works fine on modern machines in the Steam version of the game. I was unable to get the game to run at all under XP (never tried it with Vista) so haven't been able to play it for years...
