I found out whilst taking the GRE Literature practice test (yes, I do strange things in my spare time) that I have little to no idea about most British literature after Shakespeare until Jane Austen. Yep. I guess I should include Shakespeare's contemporaries too...ok, maybe the whole 16th century besides Shakespeare. *is somewhat ashamed, but also somewhat unrepentant* Does anyone have recommendations on what are the important 16th-18th century writers? Have I missed all that is good in Brit lit by this omission (although the medievalist in me says my time was well spent reading other things)? I have a sinking feeling Malory, Spenser and Marlowe lurk somewhere in these uncharted centuries, but other than that I am clueless...
