I taught the word "filler"
So, I spent most of today's advanced 3rd year class talking about manga and anime. hehe. It was the best class so far this year. I came in with my Gintama folder of homework and one of the girls grabbed it and squealed "Gin-san!" "Gin-san!" Another girl was writing about manga for her essay in English (about how manga is bad for teenagers to read, lol) and so she asked me about Jump, when I started reading it, how many series I read, how long each chapter is, etc. Note that this was a Japanese girl, and that the conversation was in English. It was a bit surreal. I had to explain the Arrancar, Espania, and Aizen's motives (from Bleach) to her.
Then back to the Gin-san fangirl: we did some fangirl rambling about him, and the girl writing about manga said she liked Katsura (from watching the anime). I said Katsura's catch line (Zura jyanai; Katsura des) and she laughed. Then another boy and I talked about who we liked in Bleach, and theories about Isshin, and if Nell was a girl or not (I said yes, he confirmed it by looking it up in wikipedia). Then we started on Naruto, and that's when I introduced him to the word "filler" (an anime episode that's not in the manga). He sagely informed me that they probably had to make a lot of Naruto fillers, because they had caught up to the manga. I said they didn't have to make them so bad. He agreed. And then we started quoting bits of favorite Gintama episodes, because the show is just awesome. I think I impressed them with my geekiness.
Although some of them didn't get much of their essays done before class was finished, it was fun to connect with them and not have to do a boring lesson on eco-cities like I have been doing the past few weeks.
