Today I went to a rugby game. I will try almost anything (if it doesn't go against my moral code) at least once, so I thought I would go see the sport where brutality is lauded, and being bloody on the pitch can get one sent to the bench. Shaun wanted to explain everything to me, though I think he was surprised to find out I already knew quite a few bits and pieces from watching it on TV. I know, I don't seem the person to watch sports do I?
When I was with my Grandad for a day this summer, we watched tennis and poker on cable, and had a tremendous time. I mostly heckled the players, but that's what I do when I watch most things. Can't say watching sports is something I would consciously choose to do; if I had the choice between reading a book or watching sports, I would pick the book every time. I used to annoy my roommate in Uni by bringing a book to the school's volleyball or basketball games, so that when I'd get bored -say, 75% of the time- I could multitask.
Shaun asked if girls normally go to football games, and I said no. I said mostly girls whose boyfriends drag them along (to high school games) or something similar. Or they're tomboys. Shaun then asked me if I was a tomboy. I had to think about it, and though I *did* climb trees when I was little (to read up there, of course!), I never was into sports. Actually, I sucked at most sports. I played baseball when I was...6...and then nothing more until I was 17 and did tennis with my sister at the junior college. That didn't go too well either. We were horrible at it. So I guess I'm not a tomboy-in the strict sense of the word.
We had a fun time though today. We sat with the old geezers who shouted at the people in front of us who stood up too long and blocked their view. We chanted and yelled and heckled (yay!). The heckling was the best bit. I should write a limerick in praise of heckling.
