I'm awake because I'm waiting for the laundry to finish; my pjs are in there, and I wouldn't mind climbing into some toasty warm pjs...
Randomly thinking about the last time I went out to eat with the bf and his mom; the subject of having kids came up and he and I are in agreement that we don't want any. We're not saying we never want any (because, hey, never say never, you know?) but there are no plans to have kids anytime soon.
His mom made the comment that we shouldn't be selfish.
At the time, that comment bothered me, but I kept quiet because I was at a loss for words. Anyway, it didn't bother me as much as it does now; now that I've had time to mull it over. Seriously? In this day and age, that old misconception is still alive and kicking? Exactly how am I being selfish for not wanting to have kids? I honestly don't understand that idea at all. If I know I don't want the responsibility of birthing and raising a child, how is that selfish?
I mean, honestly? I really (emphasis on that REALLY) want a dog, but I've put off getting one because I cannot, in good conscience, own one right now. My financial health, while pretty good, is not enough to cover the initial costs of having a puppy in my household. Also, I don't believe that the breed of dog I want in particular would thrive in a townhome; it would need a nice-sized yard to romp around in. While I would love to own a dog, I can't provide a good home for one right now, and I understand this.
Selfishness would be getting the dog I want anyway even while knowing all of that.
Now replace "dog" with "child". All those reasons for not owning a dog can also be applied to not having a child. But the biggest difference is that I actually WANT a dog. The responsibilities for owning a dog differ greatly from the responsibilities of having a child; and I wouldn't mind owning a dog.
I'm rambling at this point. I'm not sure if I'm making any sense. All I know is that I don't want kids and I think that selfishness would be defined as giving birth to an unwanted child.
Anyone else agree? Disagree?
