And the World is Beautiful!

Firstly - podfic!! For Shadows even!

Courtesy of
lunchee who put in a truly amazing amount of work and created a truly fabulous interpretation and even includes a little behind-the-scenes bonus about the end about why she made the choices and stylistic decisions she did. I really recommend that you listen the whole way through because she's got some really insightful things to say.

Go listen to it and leave her lots of comments!
Shadows was always a fic that I 'heard' rather than visualized. I read this out loud as I was writing (and Best Beloved Housemate is owed drinks for not thumping me) so it's always been a work that I really wanted to hear someone read. That being said, Shadows is effectively my Frankenstein fic - after two years, I accept that people do genuinely like it but I'm still honestly baffled about why they do. I wrote it for the kink meme and it was pure self-indulgence. It was originally supposed to be around 1.5K and totally forgettable but I made the stylistic choice to anchor it as solidly in the canon as I could because John having psychic powers shouldn't be the solution - it should be the problem.

People have told me that was a weakness and a strength but, personal tastes aside, that anchor is one of the hallmarks of the fic so I don't regret it. When I was listening to the podfic, I was really impressed by how clearly
lunchee echoed the dialogue from the episode. She talks a little about how difficult that was but I really feel it added a lot to the feel of it. She caught so many of the intonations and inflections that I tried to convey and it felt like John - the weary, often overwhelmed John - the John that I wrote. Her Moriarty was the perfect combination of shrill and terrifying and the pool scene legitimately sent shivers down my spine. I think she really captured the mood that I had in mind while writing and it's one of the most wonderful things imaginable to see such a work of art and be claim a little of the credit for inspiring it.
Now, more fandom-related stuff. It was my birthday two weeks ago and thanks to the arcane mysteries of US/UK shipping, the last part of my present arrived on Thursday. There was dark mutterings from BBH that a CD ordered two weeks beforehand should have arrived in time but honestly, I was thrilled just to get it. Nowhere in Derby seems to have ordered in Kris' album and I like to have the physical CD.

One of the great moments of cosmic resonance is that while both
deannawol and I consider ourselves fans of both Adam and Kris; she's slightly more a fan of Adam and I'm slightly more a fan of Kris. So she got Trespassing for herself and Thank You, Camellia for me and we've been listening to both for the last few days. I love them both but I am coming down on
jerakeen 's side; as fantastic as Trespassing is - I think, overall, TYC is the better album.

Trespassing is good kinetic music. I'd listen to it at the gym or out for a walk or cleaning the house. I love the title track and Cuckoo is currently my favourite with Never Close Our Eyes and Pop That Lock close seconds. I prefer Adam when he's loud, happy and energetic but the slower songs like Better Than I Know Myself and Outlaws of Love are solid, genuinely resonant songs.

TYC - most of the songs are sweet and a little unselfconsciously dorky and make you smile. The two songs that kick this up my favourite album rankings are Vision of Love and Monster. Vision of Love I've talked about when I posted the video - it's a nice, positive affirmation that even if you aren't the one being cut down, you can and should stand up and be more than a silent supporter.

Monster is whole other story.
akavertigo says this is easily the best song on the album and I agree. To me, it's like Heartless; the unexpected song that reminds you that while Kris is a sweetheart, he's more than fluffy love songs and fun melodies. It's clearly a Kris Allen song but it's darker, more sinister but in the Lokean sense - the monster that smiles and tells you exactly how you've fallen into this trap just as the door closes behind you.

I want this to be a single - I want a video for this LIKE BURNING!

I have so much writing to do that it isn't even funny but I leave you with one last treat - the video for Never Close Our Eyes which makes my cyberpunk heart so very, very,  very happy!
