Sora runs through the guts of a whale and doesn't think about how wierd it is. He doesn't think of Kairi or how she'll laugh when he tells her because he isn't thinking about how to tell Kairi about it. In fact, he's not thinking about Kairi at all; not even in the "thinking-about-not-thinking-about-her" way.
Sora is thinking about brittle cruelty and wounded green eyes and silver hair. He's thinking about his best friend in the whole wide collection of worlds and he's thinking about a bruised Papou fruit and juice on a black glove dragged casually across pink lips.
He's thinking really hard about Riku and the broken, sharp hurt in his voice and his eyes. Riku's eyes can't lie; Sora was all of two when he realized that and maybe that's what went wrong. Sora's so used to listening to what he sees in Riku's eyes that somewhere along the line, he's forgotten to listen to what Riku's saying in the silence between worlds.
He leaps from a wrecked ship's mast to a rib-bone and Riku's close now, so close that his pain is sharp enough to cut Sora into little slices. But he's not afraid...at least, not afraid of being hurt. He's afraid that Riku's going to outrun him again and that this time Riku will just keep going and going until he falls off the edge of Everything and then Sora's never going to be able to catch him. He isn't as fast as Riku but that's never mattered before - Riku's always waited for him.
This time he won't, Sora knows it right down to the bottom of his heart.
So when he sees Riku, hand out-stretched towards Pinocchio and face twisted in an expression that Sora remembers from a thousand splinters, cuts and twisted ankles. Riku knows this will hurt...and he's going to do it anyway because he thinks he has to.
Sora isn't as smart as Riku; he can't weave words into sentences that explain everything, he can't tell someone it's all okay with a smile or a tilt of his head. But Sora knows how to make Riku listen and he throws himself forward blindly, trusting in Donald and Goofy to keep the Heartless away from him and knocks Riku off his feet.
He feels Riku's breath whoosh out of his chest and knows he's only got until Riku figures out how to breathe again. So he doesn't let himself hesitate, grabbing his best friend's face and pulling him into a clumsy desperate kiss.
He's not sure how this works; he's seen Selphie kissing Irvine-from-the-next-island and Kairi's manga has lots of kissing people but it's not as easy as it looks. He tastes blood and salty tears and a faint lingering taste of papou juice and Riku just goes limp under him and that's not what Sora wanted at ALL!
Riku doesn't cry or just lie there like a doll with most of the stuffing taken out and Sora presses closer, almost afraid to close his eyes in case Riku fades away forever. And the tears flow down the side of Riku's face, making his eyelashes clump together and Sora wants to scream, wants to cry and take his Keyblade and kill the things that have done this, have made Riku cry and shiver and look so small and so young-
And Riku's mouth opens just a little and his hand comes up and he can feel the sudden tension - the hesitation - and he doesn't want to stop kissing but he wants Riku to touch him. And he feels Riku's hand curl around his side and those wet, bunched eyelashes open and he can see what it costs Riku to let this happen.
Don't let me go. those green eyes ask...plead. I'll never make it back up.
I know. Sora promises. And Mine and he's kissing Riku who is kissing him back and maybe things aren't alright yet, but he's got his best friend back and he thinks that that's a good place to start.
