Rad sees himself captured, unchanging, in a montage of photographs the little runt takes through the years. Beside him, Al's hair silvers, lines deepen on his forehead and beside his lips. His eyes stop being wounded, shine with happiness, then tears.
In the world beyond the photograph, Al's double dies a hero. Rad's double settles down with Yozak who disappears when a mission goes wrong. The other doubles die or integrate or simply vanish as mysteriously as they came.
Rad watches Time wither and diminish Al and starts to pull away, starts to prepare for the inevitable separation. He goes drinking with Gunter once, twice, once a month, once a week, every night. Wolfy vanishes then reappears, older but still so heart-breakingly innocent.
He reaches out for that gold and plunges into the warmth his not-brother offers. He cries, for the only time before the funeral, in Wolfy's arms on the day Al first forgets his name.
He is forgotten so often that he stops thinking of 'their' quarters and starts to find excuses to stay in Gunter's office, Wolfy's rooms, Gunter's chair...Wolfy's bed.
The maid who brings the sad news, finds Rad lying in his not-brother's bed, lips still tingling from a laughing loving kiss. He sits in silence and feels guilty at his lack of guilt. "'Til death us do part" has become "'Til Time us do part." and he wishes, with all his heart, that it had been different.
