Maou Cheri von Spitzberg sat at the desk, working through the endless mountains of paperwork - all dealing with mundane matters that her brother considered beneath the dignity of the Regent. It was night and the castle was dimly lit by dying candle flames.
*Thump... Thump... Thump....*
The soft sound of something bumping down the stairs made her put her pen down and sigh sadly. Rising to open the door, she found - as she had every night for the past month - her youngest son, dressed only in the honeybear boxers he had gotten from Conrad for Yule. Shishi-chan was dangling from one hand and he already had his other thumb tucked into his mouth; a sure sign that he was prepared to cute-ify his way out of any trouble.
"What's wrong, darling?" She asked, knowing the answer but needing to ask anyway.
"C'nt find Chushu Aniiue...gots to find him. 'S cold tonight." The toddler's voice was muffled by the thumb but the indignation at 'Chushu Aniiue's breaking the rules as set down by Cheri and the nurse was only just enough to drown out the worry.
"He's gone to stay with his father for a bit, sweetheart." Cheri reminded Wolf, her voice thick to her own ears. "He'll be back soon and then you won't have to worry."
"'M not worried!" Wolf wailed, tears starting. "He be cold! He get SICK! He not come back!!"
"Oh, darling!" Cheri swept her son up, ignoring the impending tantrum. "He will come back. I promise, I promise! He'll be safe and healthy and nothing will go wrong." Wolf's teary green eyes made her heart twist in her chest and she settled him onto her lap. "Now, you help Kaasan with her paperwork and Conrad will be back before you know it!"
The toddler pulled Shishi-chan into his arms and looked up at her sternly. "Pwomise? Cross heart and hope to fly?"
"I promise, my dear. He'll be home soon." Cheri smiled, despite the sting in her eyes.
"Kay-kay. Shishi 'n me'll wait for him so's he won't get in twouble."
Cheri kept the smile on her face, praying that the Shinou would not to make her a liar. Come home safely, Conrad.
