IT LIVES!
After finding a suitable donor chip (cheapest one by five bucks) and a dramatic, heart-pounding backseat operation, my laptop once again returns to the land of the living. It should run better now that I've put a full gig of memory into it, and while initial tests don't show any significant improvement in performance, the lappy is at least up and running again, which is a damn sight better than what it was an hour ago. I'll be monitoring its progress to see if the new chip doesn't have any initial problems, but I'm sure it will make a full recovery, and just in time for class tomorrow! Yay!
