Opera #3: Don Giovanni

So on Saturday, my housemate and I went and attended our college's production of Mozart's "Don Giovanni."  It was really quite good, although no crazy high notes for the sopranos, which goes against that wonderful story about how Mozart had a vendetta against all sopranos and tried to kill them with crazy arias in his operas.  Despite being about the ultimate rake Don Juan (Don Giovanni in Italian) and his ultimate damnation, it had a multiplicity of funny moments.  Don Giovanni's servant, Leporello, who is somewhat uncomfortable about the scumbag that his is master, but doesn't really know what to do about it, was really good--the actor who played him did a good job, both with the singing, and the acting.  There was quite a lot of physical comedy between Leporello and Don Giovanni, most of it on Leporello's side.  Hilarious! :)  And the girl who played Donna Anna was crazy intense.  A voice that carried to the rafters, and this totally awesome intense "need veangeance!" look for most of her arias.  It was scary--I thought she was gonna eat me. :)  Actually, everyone was really good (Zerlina and Masetto were also hilarious--they are not gonna have a happy marriage!), except Don Ottavio.  Everyone else is emoting and overacting because it's an opera and it's what you do, and he was totally bland and expressionless.  He had this whole aria about how they needed to go comfort his fiancee and he was gonna go get veangeance, but he just looked bored, and rather passive through the whole thing.  It was kind of funny. :)

I also made funnel cake yesterday.  It was beautiful. :)  So bad for you, but oh so very good.  I was actually really impressed at how it turned out, since I wasn't expecting it to be that good, but it was wonderful. :)  And my housemate made homemade pumpkin cookies, which were also way yummy--we both had cooking success! :)

So I've been having a run of really bizarre dreams.  A couple nights ago I dreamed there was this museum type exhibit on Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey in a rotting cave, and instead of a museum-like exhibit that I was expecting, it was the mummified bodies of the main (fictional!) characters in that novel.  And they moved!  Like animatronic, mummified fictional characters...Bizarre!  And then last night, it started out as a Remington Steele dream and somehow morphed into this dream where I was in this small unknown European country and engaged to the king, who was like way older than I was.  They liked American football, and I remember waking up being very concerned about what religion I would raise my children as.  Isn't it interesting what your brain conjures up for you?

And I got my new housemate, and life is a lot better than it was last week (despite the never ending round of tests--I have another one today.  Ick).  I was panicking last week and there was no need. :)  I'm better now, I promise.  I'd be even better if I didn't have any homework or tests to do. :)
