I think this interview is pretty interesting. You get to know more about the show =D

Vol 5: Takahiro Nishijima (Tetsuya Hino)

What was your initial impression when you were first told about the project?

At first, I had the impression that men's rhythmic gymnastics were more or less the same with the kind of artistic gymnastics that you see all the time. After looking it up though, I found out that "tumbling" itself is a move which you can only use within this particular sport, and that, only very recently, all the rules before have ceased to apply. Now, new and rarely seen techniques are being introduced and they get more and more extreme as they go on so I guess it brings out the fighting spirit hidden within guys. It's interesting like that.

There's this school that specializes in teaching these techniques and I went to see a couple of their training sessions. During these sessions, whenever someone comes up with a brand new technique, regardless of whether it's an individual one or a group one, everyone reacts very encouragingly before getting all fired up to outdo the guy. So it's the kind of sport that allows you to freely express your passion and nurture your willpower.

The first thought I had when I first saw a full routine was that it's not all that different from dancing, especially during the formations they had when moving, but when I had to do it for myself, I realized how very wrong I was. Even though shooting has already started, the training sessions are still going on and I find the more I train, the more difficulties I encounter. (LoL)

Tell us a little about your character, Tetsuya Hino.

Definitely not a team player, this one. And not one to pull back on the words he uses either. Has absolutely no interest in the group event. Is happy doing his own individual thing.

As he's the character I've been assigned, there's a lot of individual scenes I have to do and even when there are scenes with the others, this guy refuses to be a part of the circle so it gets pretty lonely being him. So when the cameras aren't rolling, you'd see me sticking to the group like glue. (LoL) I'm actually on the opposite side of the spectrum from Hino, personality-wise, cos I get lonely very easily. (LoL) Guys like Hino aren't very good with people so I'm guessing that being standoffish is just easier for him. Although, if I think about it now, that's a sign of a lonely person, too, innit?

In the show, all the characters are really into the sport but did you get into it for real yourself?

Well, doing this show is what's foremost on my mind these days. (LoL) Even when I'm doing something else, or simply moving from one place to another, I'd be thinking about it so, yeah, I guess I did get very into it in a manner of speaking.

And because the producers aren't employing stunt doubles, everyone had to learn the moves and do them for real. In Hino's case, he's a national representative so he's already a pro right from the get-go...which only means a lot of pressure for me. "Toss, flip and grab!" is what I repeat to myself like a mantra in my head when actually doing it in order to make my body move according to the image I have in my head. Doing this is really important. To tell the truth, handling the apparatus isn't easy at all and having to hold it while trying to pull off a somersault is unbelievably difficult. Just by holding it slightly wrong, your entire balance goes down the drain. And if you don't toss it just right, you can forget about catching it back either. Whenever I fail in catching them, I'd get so frustrated sometimes I'd go, "Argh, dammit all to hell! Why won't you just bloody cooperate??!" I know it's silly to blame the apparatus but I can't help feeling like they've betrayed me somehow. (LoL)

In the initial stages, I didn't think too much about it and could easily catch them after tossing them about but then I ran into a wall soon after that and started to consciously think about it but then I only got worse at it. I did get it in the end...but only after a lot sweat and tears. (LoL) You won't be able to tell just by looking, cos they all make it look so easy but it's actually a lot of hard work. If you feel the urge to try the sport for yourself after watching this show, I'd advise you to leave the apparatus-tossing-while-flipping stunt until *a lot* later. (LoL)

How would you personally like the show to develop?

I'd like...for Hino to join the group routine (LoL). It's just a personal wish, though. (LoL)

And lastly, a message to the viewers, if you please.

The character in which I'm playing, Tetsuya Hino, is a the sort of character which adds flavor to the show, I guess. Bluntly put, he's a bit of an ass so if I may be so bold as to ask a favor, please please please don't hate him for it. (LoL). Also, this show is interesting in that it shows how people with different characters, ideals and backgrounds are all able to come together when they share a common goal, so don't miss it!
