His statement. It sounds like he is trying to take Arashi's good side by bashing other singers.

I don't think that he's bashing other singers. He's just pointing out what lately is the problematic about releases. Because I think he is right. Many artists (and he didn't name them because this works for a bunch of artists, even if I see the tendency in idol-related acts using such methods the most) use such methods and I think even if using them to a particular point is totally OK, some artists really take this to an extent and I don't like that trend because it does not show how good or how popular a group's music really is but it only shows how much people buy, no matter if because of the music or because of the extra tickets, goodies etc. It's not that the president is bashing others for them, he just points out how it is an amacing result to achive such a win without using such methods because it's rare that acts do not use such methods recently. (And well, I guess it's his personal opinion that he prefers releases the traditional way (so do I) but I don't think that this is something bad.)

There is no need to single out Arashi when criticizing the current selling method. He should be more neutral.

But wasn't it just out of the current happening (means the fact that Arashi won) that he took the chance to praise them? It's not like it's completely taken out of context.

He did not blurt out this statement out of nowhere. It's bec Arashi won 6 awards in Oricon and the CEO of Oricon just wanted to emphasize how grand of a feat that is, and wants the press to recognize that achievement that did not use handshake/ticket etc

Maybe he is just angry about the dirty trick of selling method to top HIS oricon ranking which makes the oricon ranking has no meaning anymore, me think so XD

To be honest, physical copies are meaningless in this day where people prefer to buy them digitally. Which is why I found his statement unnecessary and biased.

p.s: Thank you very much for being the only cool-headed person to reply to me in this thread.

Are digital releases really preferred? I myself don't buy digital releases because for me they have no meaning. I want the CD and the booklet with the lyrics that's why I only buy physical copies for my music collection. But well I guess opinions about that might differ a lot so this is just my personal point of view.

Yes. Most people are not interested with the B-side songs. The other option would be to rent the CDs and rip them at home.

Hm that's a pity. I love B-sides there are a lot of good B-sides that's why I buy singles in first place, otherwise I could wait for the album release if I would be only interested in the A-Sides.

physical sales are "meaningless" because of all the gimmicks idols/artist use. but physical sales are still alot more compared to digital sales.
there are artist who do sell more digitally tho

Criticizing the methods of selling CDs is not bashing though. Honestly it speaks volumes when majority of the sales achieved on the charts nowadays are b/c of crazy numbers of versions, handshaking, and ticket sales. Like it's such a sad site to see when artists can't sell on name/music alone. It's just refreshing to see an artist who pull large amounts of units w/o alienating fans into being compulsive buyers esp for the sake of having a 'chance' to meet said artists or w/e attached reason to buy it.

Same. Someone of his position would normally not make a statement like that. I see it as a publicity stunt.

He does make statements now and then, even with the state of Kpop in Japan
