So apparently the guys side of hot springs are more conservative. In the woman's side, you do just walk around naked. And those little towels are for cool water/drying your face.
The most I ever see is women using them to cover up when they're outside the pool, and then it's just hanging down in front of you.
Plus, isn't it the cliche to have the white towel folded up on your head?
(To be fair, if it was full of older people, I saw something on TV where they were talking about how the younger generation is more brazen walking around naked, while the older generation would cover up with towels more.)
The towel on your head is about half-half, from my experience. It is especially useful when there is no dry place near where you are in the hot spring.
(And I can sort of see it with older people, but it also probably depends where you are. I've been to a few where the older women were less shy than the younger ones.)
Eh, last time I went to an onsen a man was sitting down at the doorway with a massive erection, not even covering it up with his towel. I suppose it depends on where you go.
Guys are more conservative in general, not just in Japan, when it comes to baring it all in front of other men. A lot feel uncomfortable seeing another dude's wang just...there. Girls couldn't care less. It's like we've adopted the attitude of 'Oh boobs. Yeah, I have them too. Meh'.
i think this has to be a regional thing. i haven't been to japan, but i've read forums about people visiting onsens and such, and it sounded to me like being naked was pretty common for men and women both. they probably just didn't want to see a naked foreigner or something lol.
No, I think it`s just because he`s got a big penis and it made the other men feel very self conscious and they didn`t want to see it.
From what I heard, dudes don`t usually cover themselves. And I`ve been to a co-ed mud onsen before. The men walking around didn`t cover themselves either. Only the guys (who were Japanese) from our group did because we knew each other and the long car ride home would`ve been super awkward.
