A new full trailer was released for Shinji Aramaki’s upcoming CG-animated movie Harlock: Space Pirate (known simply as “Captain Harlock” in Japan).

The film is a $30 million reboot of Leiji Matsumoto’s classic sci-fi manga and anime franchise which first gained popularity in the 1970s.

The new trailer begins with a quote from “Avatar” director James Cameron, who got an early screening and praised the unprecedented quality of the project.

The story’s titular character, Captain Harlock (voiced by Shun Oguri), gained fame as the captain of the Arcadia, the last of four Death Shadow Class starships which were built as the ultimate weapon against an oppressive invading force of aliens. However, Harlock vanished near the end of the war. In the year 2977, the vilified Harlock returns with a huge skull carved on the bow of the Arcadia, ready to fight for mankind and challenge Earth’s government.

“Harlock: Space Pirate” will be released in Japan on September 7, 2013.
