Popular idol group AKB48 has become the official messengers of the Japanese Red Cross Society!
On May 17th, AKB48 members Takahashi Minami, Minegishi Minami, Itano Tomomi, Takajou Aki, and Watanabe Mayu appeared at a special press conference, where they revealed that they will be officially representing the Red Cross.
Immediately following the earthquake, the girls of AKB48 made a large donation to the Red Cross to help support their fellow citizens in their time of need. This time, AKB48 has raised an incredible 187.3 billion yen through their “Dareka no Tame ni Project“, fundraising activities, and the proceeds from the group’s releases. Their company also donated approximately 220 million yen on the 13th.
“We knew how precious things were before (the earthquake hit),” Takahashi Minami said to the crowd following their announcement. “If we can join forces one by one, there will always be lives we can save.”
When asked about the Team K’s song “Boku ni Dekiru Koto” - which is currently being used in commercials for the Red Cross - Takahashi Minami replied, “Recording (the song) was different than usual. We were all able to sing with positive feelings about brightening Japan while making eye contact with each other.”
On the same day, the Japanese Red Cross Society also debuted a special collaboration website titled “AKB48 to Issho ni Motto Yoku Shiru Sekijuuji!” (Get to Know the Red Cross More with AKB48!). In addition to exclusive interviews with the girls, the website contains quizzes on Red Cross certification and stories from those who experienced aid from the Red Cross firsthand. “Since I didn’t experience much myself, it was enlightening,” said Takahashi about the website.
