Actor Mukai Osamu will be appearing in NHK’s historical drama “Gou ~Hime Tachi no Sengoku~” and recently, he showed off his costume from the set, complete with a “chonmage” haircut (the traditional samurai haircut from the Edo Period).
Since it’s his first time working on a historical drama, the actor commented, “I took some care getting used to the way samurais stand up and sit. I have been trying to sit cross-legged on the floor in my daily life.”
In the drama, he will be portraying Tokugawa Hidetada, the third husband of the main character Gou (played by Ueno Juri). Mukai became popular last year after playing the husband of the main character in NHK’s morning drama, “Gegege no Nyoubo“. Consequently, his role in “Gou” allows him to become the first actor to play the heroine’s husband in both an NHK morning drama and an NHK historical drama.
In “Gou ~Hime Tachi no Sengoku~”, his character struggles with living up to the legacy of his father, Ieyasu, but eventually becomes Japan’s ruling shogun.
Mukai commented, “The second generation is buried (in history), but it was Gou and Hidetada that gave birth to (the third generation shogun) Iemitsu. I want to break the current image of Ietada.”
