Manga-based film to screen in U.S. on January 20; opens in Japan on January 29
Viz Pictures' New People unit and Fathom Events have issued a list (
PDF) of American theaters that will screen the first live-action film based on
Hiroya Oku's manga
Gantz on January 20, 2011. Over 300 theaters are listed in 46 states; the four without screenings are Alaska, Mississippi, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
Kazunari Ninomiya (
Tekkon Kinkreet, Letters from Iwo Jima) of the
Arashi musical group and award-winning actor
Kenichi Matsuyama (
Death Note,
Detroit Metal City,
NANA,
The Legend of Kamui)
star as two friends who are resurrected after a deadly subway accident and forced to take on violent, mysterious missions.
Yuriko Yoshitaka (
Kaiji),
Natsuna, and
Takayuki Yamada (
Trainman,
Crows Zero,
H2: Kimi to Ita Hibi) also star in this film from director
Shinsuke Sato (
The Princess Blade,
Suna-dokei,
Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror).
The film
premiered in Japan on November 29, and it opens for wide release there on January 29. The film's American screenings will
include an English-language over-dubbed track, but a live
interview with the two Japanese stars will follow the film.
