Oh, vacation is the best of all times

Jun 14, 2012 12:39

First of all, why the fuck don't I yet have any One Direction or Avengers icons??? This is wrong. It shall be rectified eventually.

Second of all, oh geez, this vacation is the best vacation I've had since...the last one! Heh. But seriously, it has been so ridiculously good so far.

I had a redeye on Saturday night, and so I arrived at
trixie's place on Sunday morning after, oh, about four hours of kind-of-sort-of-sleep. I was not at my best! But it didn't matter because all I had to do was sit on her couch, and then
bayleaf showed up, and the three of us hung out and talked for 10 hours. No really! 10 hours! It was pretty amazing. It was my only chance to see
bayleaf since she is in the midst of med school studying hell, and we tempted her away for the day. Aside from desperate needs for sleep, I probably could have hung out and talked with them for another 10 hours, easily.

The next day I felt like I had a massive hangover, and I actually can't really remember what we did, even though it was only two days ago. Um. I think we mostly sat around in our pajamas and talked some more and watched a bunch of episodes of Lewis?? Pretty sure that was Monday.

Hey, I've seen Lewis now! It's been on my list, and I have to say it did not disappoint in any way. That James Hathaway is a pretty awesome character, and I see the slash and will probably enjoy reading some fic now, but I actually just really enjoyed it as a solidly written and acted British cop/mystery show. But Hathaway omg! Lewis, too. But. {{{{Hathaway}}}}

Tuesday we had plans to leave the apartment, and that was good because it forced us to, you know, leave the apartment. First I made
trixie watch some One Direction videos and look at a bunch of gifs while I provided running commentary on the OMG SO SLASHY RIGHT DON'T YOU SEE IT YOU REALLY CAN'T MISS IT AT ALL content. Current fannish loves (Lewis and 1D) exchanged and pimped, we headed out to meet up with
wolfshark for dinner, so she and I could talk through and plan the panel we're doing at Con.txt. She's one of those people I've seen around fandom for years, and with whom I knew I had been at cons before, but we had never actually met. She was delightful, and it was a really fun conversation, and I'm looking forward to our panel! Also, I ate amazing meatloaf!

Then as we were leaving dinner to go catch a train home, we spontaneously decided to go see Avengers, instead of waiting until the next day as we had originally planned. I hadn't seen it yet. OH. MY. GOD. I now totally understand why fandom is freaking out. I can't go into detail right now because I'm not coherent enough, but I loved it. I actually felt like I was high afterward, and I couldn't stop smiling, and it was just so thoroughly satisfying. That Joss Whedon sure knows how to push all our favorite buttons, doesn't he? Yeah. Wow. Also, I know some of you have made posts about this, but BRUCE FUCKING BANNER I LOVE YOU. I will 100% for sure be seeing that again.

Yesterday we also had plans to leave the apartment, so yay for that. We went to see this incredibly cool art show called Artomatic, and I'm sort of hormonal because I'm starting my period, but art also just makes me emotional. So there were apparently 11 (?) floors of art in this show, and we only went through two of them in detail and then skipped to a few other specific things we wanted to see on other floors, and that in itself took us about three hours. When we stopped and decided to go for dinner, I felt overstimulated by art in the best possible way, and also just...overstimulated. I wish I lived here because I would go back several more times and try to see it all!

And then we went for dinner at this tapas restaurant called Jaleo, and it was one of the best meals I've ever had. We splurged, decided to get exactly what we wanted and fuck the cost. So I had two glasses of incredible sangria--best I've ever had!--and several ridiculously tasty little dishes, like this warm Brussel sprout salad with Serrano ham and apples and apricots and grapes. And chorizo with olive oil mashed potatoes. And a cheese pairing selection. And dates wrapped in bacon, breaded and fried, with an apple mustard sauce! Little salty, creamy baby potatoes with a red and green sauce for dipping, oh god! It was all fantastic. We shared two desserts, and while under normal circumstances the chocolate hazelnut mousse and salted caramel concoction would have been enough to blow my mind, it actually seemed kind of pedestrian in comparison with this incredible flan that was infused with a delicate orange flavor and served with a cinnamony whipped cream. Flan is not usually my thing, but this was absolutely heavenly. The chef's grandmother's recipe, apparently!

And today we head off to the hotel for Con.txt, and I've got three panels to do this year. I didn't do any at Escapade this year, so I'm feeling good about getting back in that zone. Plus, my people! I get to see my people! Some of them in just a few hours!

I swear I will do my best to post an actual con report this year. For reals.
