Huckabee: "The Ten Commandments cover it all."

Feb 11, 2008 20:40

According to a new CBS story, Huckabee claims that we only have all these laws because people are immoral:

"Frankly, we really don’t need a lot of law if we are people of morality,” he said to the congregation of over 7,000. “There are only ten basic laws that we need. If you think about it, the Ten Commandments cover it all.”

On some level, that may be true. But then again, probably not. Where in the Ten Commandments does it tell us how fast to drive or what tax rate to pay? How about environmental regulations -- where in the Ten Commandments does it tell us when power plants should install scrubbers to reduce their sulfur dioxide emissions? How about the need to get professional licenses -- how does God decide who gets to practice dentistry? How about whether we need to get a permit to build an addition on our homes -- would that be covered by "You shall not covet your neighbor's house" (meaning, just don't build the addition)?
