This past week there was a post on the Asatruar lj list asking "which god should I ask for help in XXXX area" (paraphrased)... The problem with being gone a few days is when you post a reply it is usually never seen since most have moved on from the thread, it had been 3 days since the last post when I replied, I doubt anyone has really seen it ( Read more... )

You're not the only one who finds it annoying when people try to reduce deities to static functions. It's not only ignorant, but disrespectful to our gods as well. To quote Marion Ingham, "It makes them merely the gods of simple people who gawped at the sky and cowered when it thundered and lightened - as opposed to the one real god, who is an abstraction only more advanced peoples can imagine."

My response to the Astruar LJ (which I'm not on) would have been, "Whichever gods or goddesses you have a strong relationship with." Why on earth would anyone ask a god for a favor if he doesn't already have some knowledge of and relationship with that deity? It's like walking up to a total stranger and begging for a handout. And I know there are homeless bums who do that, but I wouldn't want to join their ranks on a spiritual level. When I do ask for help (which is rare) I almost always speak to Ingui Fréa. Even if it isn't his area of expertise, he's a god so he's probably pretty good at whatever it is I need. And if not, I've heard he has some clout in Osgeard.
