new girl?

i've been sitting next to this pretty cute girl in paleontology all semester. we haven't had much opportunity to talk all semester. class is all lecture; we show up when it starts, and leave when it ends. not a lot of time to associate with people like in artsyfartsy classes.

during the "lab" we had, i was talking with some other students, and i caught her looking at me, and laughing at the (not very good) jokes i was making.

i showed up a bit early on monday, because we had an exam and i had to last-minute-cram on the couch on the third floor of the physical science building. some other students showed up early and did the same. went into the classroom like 5 to 10 minutes early, and she was there. we comisserated about how unprepared for the exam we were, and how badly we were gonna fail. she's kinda soft-spoken, but not in a bad way. she's not a geo/bio/paleo major either, and is just taking the class for "fun" like me, only in a more aimless fashion. didn't have much chance to talk about anything else, because we both had to promptly fail our exams right about then. didn't see her much after class. she typically bolts out the door.

caught her after class today, got her name: alaina (elena?). hard to tell, she's kinda quiet alayna, with a y. we talked a bit more. my route to lunch and her route to her car overlapped for half the campus. i mentioned that i was going to lunch and not just following her, and she made a sarcastic "i'm so creeped out" motion. sense of humor. didn't have time to stop for food, had to go to work. she's a sophomore. she's (recently?) from new york, and doesn't really like south florida too much. doesn't seem at all like the bad kind of new yorker (might have meant the state not the city). lives in wellington. works at carrabas, i think she said. seems to like me.

i guess i'll ask her out next class.

chicks man, school
