Hubris: pride? Arrogance?

Who would suspect me of that when my tie was pulled into a tight knot under my chin and James was sprawled across his bed with his bare feet waving and Remus was looking thin and worn where he drew his knees closer with his arms wrapped around his loneliness and the moon was waxing through the window and Sirius was sitting on the floor with his anger before Christmas.

“I’m going home this year,” I said and I threw my books into the trunk as though I didn’t care.

“I thought we were staying - all of us - to work on the map;” James had a careless grace in everything he did and a warm smile that curled at the corners of his mouth, “I thought you’d stay too, Worms.”

“No. Sorry. I have to go home.”

“You don’t have to,” Remus offered the words like candles at an altar but I didn’t believe in hope anymore because I was small and scurrying and I knew all about dark corners and I was afraid.

“We’ll see you after Christmas then;” Sirius pushed his hair out of his blue eyes, “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t.”

I rolled my eyes and thought about how young they were - all of them - here in the safety of Hogwarts with no thought of tomorrow.

“I’m here, Lord,” and I wore a white mask and the dark pressed around me; “What would you have me do?”

“I’d have you prove yourself, Peter.”

Hubris . . .
