I'll need to catch you at home if you want me to chuck you Tom's sets (some of them should already be uploaded, actually, which makes my job easier). If you keep at this DJ malarky I'm obviously going to have to buy you an external HD for your birthday and send it to you full of music ;)

The DJ sets are each one large file of between 80 and 90mb apiece. I am reliably informed the point of DJing is not just what you play but how you mix it...

Hey, don't DJ with a set of illegally copied music! That's soo wrong and amateur :/ And it really is wrong esp. if you take money for it.

The people I know that do that have never gotten money off it.

Also the club should be paying royalties to the respective copyright holders, which they likely aren't doing if they are letting the DJ play illegal copies. The club then can pocket more out of the entrance fee / booze sales, which really is taking another person's work (the music) and using it to make some money. And mp3 quality is shit anyway ( ... )

The understanding I have is that, especially when it comes to small alternative nights (and it's from that perspective that I'm speaking), the people running the night tend to make enough to keep it running (if that), ie to rent out the venue if it's rented, or to pay the staff if the club is owned, have flyers printed, etc, and that the bands are also frequently happy to send out promo copies of their music (sometimes in mp3 format) as long as the DJs play the it, because it's to the bands' advantage to have their work heard.

I understand this, and I'm not a fan of royalties either.. but really, offering to send someone half a gig of mp3s to play at a club is a bit over the top. You might be undercutting some legit DJ who'd take a nominal fee (like between 20 to 200 euros for the whole night, depending on how much the organizers can afford) to actually pay for the records he is playing, and this is what I'd like people to think about a bit as well (coming from a former hobbyist DJ here, who got very tired of the bittorrent kids who'd work for free). Most people dl illegal mp3s because they can get away with it.. I hate that attitude spreading to DJ'ing just because mostly people can get away with it, although at least in my eyes it's simply not right.

Actually, I wasn't offering her half a gig of mp3s. I was offering her half a gig which comprises of five DJ sets (each DJ set mixed into one complete large mp3 file) compiled by my boyfriend, who is an industrial DJ, in case it gives her ideas for her own playing in future.
