"So, yup, nothing that we heard about Monterey in this episode contradicted what has been said in the past." - Heh, true! I also scrutinized this scene against what we've heard of this before, and you're right, they didn't really wander into the inconsistency territory at any point.
I know that a lot of people accused the show of playing fast and loose with their show's history here, but they really did not.
The scene was rather "flat", so to speak. Then again, maybe we should take into consideration the fact that it wasn't happening in real time (like Klaus' massacre), it wasn't even a regular flashback. It was someone recalling the past, so perhaps the POV influenced the intensity of the recollection.
I don't know, I still think you're pure joy at watching TVD again is influencing your take on stuff (and I can totally see why), but something THAT horrific that Stefan did SHOULD have not come across as ho-hum no matter how it was recalled. Heck, the brief recall that we've had up to now of the Monterey event -- which have just been a few verbal recollections -- have been chilling.
"And then when she entered his mind, she realized that at heart, in his soul, he is not evil." - *sigh* And if only this didn't feel like such a repetition. Emily, Lexi, even Rose. Stefan and his heart, soul, love are pure. All things Stefan are pure. We get it, show. Can we move on now? Lol
Exactly. I really think this was *such* the wrong take to go with here.
"Then have her react to this, not because he's a pure special snowflake, but because that was a conflict that she had felt growing within herself." - That's exactly what I was counting on to gather from this scene! It would've been way better that way.
Double exactly. Instead of making it about the special that is Stefan, it should have been about Seline. See, just not the best writing/directing of this episode. But what do you expect when it's a new writer and director (for the last season, sigh.)
"The big bads just can't get enough of the Special Snowflake that is Stefan Salvatore." - That I actually don't mind because it cracks me up every time lol And I don't think it works as a particularly favorable compliment to Stefan, because it never seems to stem from the fact that the villains enjoy corrupting the goodness embodied in the form of Stefan Salvatore. But rather from the fact that when he is bad, he is the worst. And that's more disturbing than impressive or enviable.
You do have a very valid point. I mean, it really isn't a compliment that the big bads want Stefan as their side boo, LOL!
"It's a combination of all of the above with a particular nod to the first point." - Ha, yes! Agreed.
"First impressions die really hard" - That's a really intetesting and good point. You're right. I keep forgetting about that.
It reall is just so true and really does explain the interactions that our gang have with Stefan and Damon.

Exactly, it was so very underplaying. And this whole 'Ripper of Monterey' has been built up since the s2 finale. That's a LONG time to build up as something so terrible and horrific and it just fell so flat.
I know that a lot of people accused the show of playing fast and loose with their show's history here, but they really did not.
