The Twitter chatter among critics who are ahead of broadcast is that 103 is a bad episode, but 104 is great. So I'm hanging on to see if I agree. I was honestly expecting worse after what was said... ;) Low expectations, I guess.
I'm just loving this show, I thought the last one was definitely the weakest of the batch so far, but the first two were so good and the show overall feels so refreshing, that I didn't mind it much. 2nd ep after the pilot is always a weak spot anyway. Ellis is definitely their biggest what the F problem right now, I'm not really sure what they're trying to accomplish with him. I appreciate the rest of the characters have been given layers so why he's so one note childish is aggravating. The rest I'm really enjoying though, I think they really mined some great gold with the whole Ivy or Karen thing, it's a dilemma I feel like as a viewer I'm stuck in the middle of as well. They're juggling some interesting gender issues of the industry with the producer lady, and some tangled gray areas with the director's casting couch and Julia's family issues vs her affair with Micheal. I tend to think they can visit more of this at the 10 o'clock spot but at the same time, the 10 spot might have hurt the pilot's potential for opening numbers
( ... )
I enjoy aspects of Glee and still like their music, but overall, I'm enjoying this show much more. Ellis just ... yeah, he just sucks.

I agree with all of this, absolutely.
I keep meaning to track down the music from the show, especially the Marilyn songs, I'm loving them. (I didn't like the OTT and somewhat crude sexuality of the choreography for the first number, but I loved the song.)
