Pirates of Caribbean Trilogy

So I watched the first PotC movie in theaters, liked enough to buy it when it came out. Watched the second in the theaters and was one of the few I knew of who liked it as much as the first. However, by the time it came out on DVD, I was a tad low on funds and so couldn't buy it. And by the time that the third movie came out in theaters and went to DVD, I was REALLY low on funds and so didn't even see it.

Flashforward to getting my income tax last week (woohoo!), I treated myself by buying the second and third movie (even though I hadn't seen the third, I figured I'd like it). I was wrong ... I LOVED IT!! ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!!! Yes, it was convoluted, yes, it was long, yes, it stretched incredulity in quite a ridiculous fashion, but ... I adored it. I loved all of the callbacks, I loved how they actually dealt with and resolved all situations that we're brought up in the first two movies. I loved how in the end those two naval guards first seen near the beginning of PotC1 (guarding the Dauntless and Interceptor) were with the pirate crew at the end.

I LOVED how Will's character went from being the noble, upstanding naive boy to the backstabbing, two-timing, pirate-y scoundrel all in the name of keeping his promise, back to a noble, upstanding, seasoned man. And from the moment Will and Elizabeth ridiculously, gloriously got married amidst the stormy battle, I was fully into them at last. And then Davy Jones stabbed him, and I knew that the stupid "touch of destiny" thing from Calypso did actually mean what I had oh so hoped it would not ... he was meant to be the captain of the Flying Dutchman. I teared up then, and by the time Will was getting his boot from Elizabeth on their beach, I was crying. And when he laid the chest on the rock and told her that she'd always had his heart, the tears were streaming. Heck, even as I type this, I'm tearing up again.

I am a huge Orlando Bloom fan, so it's not surprising that I adored him in this. I, however, am not a Johnny Depp fan -- I like him, but don't love him, and I most decidedly am NOT a Keira Knightley fan, but this is my favorite Depp role, and the only time I've pretty much liked Knightley in a role from moment one. Oh, who am I kidding? by the time Elizabeth gave the rousing speech to the crew of the Black Pearl, I loved her.

What I loved most though was Elizabeth and Will, and I never would have thought after the first movie. They were the bland, boring hero/heroine with the perfect, untested love story. By the end, I felt the creators had succeeded in convincing me that they had a love story for the ages. While I do think that Keira Knightley had more chemistry with Jack Davenport (Norrington) and Johnny Depp, I was won over by the connection that portraying these characters obviously created between Bloom and Knightley. And so I positively, absolutely adored the tragic, yet beautiful resolution of the Will/Elizabeth romance. The final scene with them on the beach was exquisite and had my heart melting and breaking at the same time.

*Sigh* Just LOVE!
