i've been listening to joanna newsom lately. i obtained her album, "the milk-eyed mender" from matt in exchange for the trainspotting soundtrack. it was a good trade. i was expecting something a lot different, so i turned it off. and then i came back and decided to just try it out. i was drawn in by the voice. after you comprehend the delicate intricacies of the harp parts, you can search deeper into the soul of the music. it is found in the voice. the thing about the album is that it sounds so innocent. the voice sounds something like a 1st grade girl singing something so heartfelt to her class, straining for the high notes and crackling on the lower notes. it's so cute, like an emotional child that no one takes seriously because they just cry whenever they don't get what they want. and the lyrics convey this too, creating surreal imagery like that of a child's fairy tale. but once in awhile she'll say something so profound that it hits you and you feel so touched. once again, picture a 1st grade girl singing in front of her class about love and loss and spirituality and injustice. i know, it doesn't fit. but that's what i love about it, it's so wise and so childish at the same time. only people who have experienced many things in life have the ability to sing of such things. i'm still afraid of looking up a picture of her because it might take away from the ignorant beauty of the music. it hurts to think that she might have done "morally bad" things in her life because i really want to find some innocence that i can hold onto. but she had to have done "morally bad" things in order to understand what she's singing about. so that's what i love about the album, wisdom and innocence combined. two contradictions that compliment eachother to create a very fine work of art that truly means something to me. because if it were possible, i would choose innocence and wisdom. but it's not, and that's why i have this record.
