“Unbelievable.”

Laura tried not to roll her eyes after Ellen Tigh cryptically breathed out the word. “What’s that, Mrs Tigh?”

“Two Adamas surviving the Fall.” Ellen’s gaze flicked between the two brothers.

“Not so unbelievable.” It was Commander Adama who’d replied in an even tone. “We were both here for the ceremony.”

“And where’s Zak? He followed you everywhere, Bill. Don’t tell me he wasn’t part of Galactica’s crew.”

Laura felt all three military men in the room immediately tense.

“Zak died a couple of years back.”

Licking her lips, she glanced towards the head of the table. William (Bill, Ellen Tigh kept calling him 'Bill') Adama’s eyes were brimming with tears. He took a gulp of ambrosia, and raised those sad eyes to meet her gaze.

The conversation resumed, but they both ignored it. The rest of the dinner guests melted away, and it was just the two of them in his quarters, continuing with their private assessments.

Finally, after what felt like hours, Ellen Tigh’s shrill tone penetrated.

“Well, Bill, your youth is a hot topic. As is the lack of experience from both you and the Madame President.”

“I’ve been in politics for over twenty years.”

“I’ve been in the Fleet for over twenty years.”

Laura blinked after she and the Commander answered simultaneously.

“Twenty years?” she asked eventually.

“Yes, I was thirteen when I was accepted as a Colonial Cadet at the Picon Academy.”

Laura frowned. No wonder he was always so serious. She suddenly found herself fretting about his lost youth and wanting to comfort him.

She grimaced at the idea, but it brought home the reality of the difference in their ages once again. And the fact that his appraisal of her throughout the evening was merely professional. It had to be, didn’t it?
