The main street was eerily silent as they rode in at dusk. It would seem news of the impending showdown had made it quickly back to the town folk and they had scattered to the outskirts or were hidden away in their homes.
Good, the less people to get in the way the better.
Bill headed toward the jailhouse. It was the best place to set up headquarters; fortified with brick it was the safest place in town.
Billy was at his post waiting for them when they came in.
“Miss Rose, are you okay?”
“Yes Billy, I’m fine.”
The young man’s face was full of concern, but hardened when he saw the Marshal. “I thought you didn’t need him.” He pointed a finger at Bill who was taking stock of the weapons they had.
Laura smiled. “I realized it was time to trust someone.” She noticed Bill’s head turn slightly to catch what she was saying about him.
Billy nodded but looked at Bill suspiciously. “Well the Marshal might need this then.” Billy held up the gold star.
Laura looked confused and took the star in her hand. “Bill, you gave up your star?”
Bill came closer. “I… it was just…” He looked at the ground slightly flustered. “I couldn’t exactly chase after you as the Marshal, could I?”
Laura smiled. “Well you’re back now.” She pinned the star on his chest. “And so am I. I’d given up hope of ever feeling free again.”
“It goes to show you never give up hope.” Bill couldn’t stop himself, even with the kid watching. He put his hand under her cheek and kissed her softly.
She hummed in response knowing no matter what the next morning brought he was by her side.
Billy shook his head. “Let’s get to work.”
