Laura rested against a bale of hay. They had settled for lunch in a nearby barn close to where Bill had set up the shooting range. It belonged to Doc Cottle who hadn’t minded them setting up shop there. He was brash, but he was honest; even when it hurt to be. Laura could see it in his eyes. Elosha cared for him and Laura trusted Elosha, so in turn she trusted the doctor.
It was nice to be out of the blazing noon day sun. Laura loosened her top buttons. She’d pinned her long tresses up on her head leaving a few stray strands wildly poking out here and there. Bill tried to be discreet but he loved the look, especially because she was so relaxed, even with the threat they had hanging over them.
She sighed and put her head back. Bill couldn’t help but notice a bead of sweat trickle down her neck, over the swell of her bosom and head south into glorious parts still unknown to him.
Laura cleared her throat. Bill looked up to find her staring at him and then quickly turned to open the lunch basket Elosha had made for them. “Sorry,” he mumbled as he looked at the treats.
She smiled. With each passing day she was becoming more comfortable with the Marshal.
Bill heard a noise and put his finger to his lips. Someone was coming close; he could hear the sound of boots on the dirt and the distinctive jingle of spurs coming closer.
“Up,” he whispered and helped her scale the small wood ladder up into the hayloft with him close behind.
Footing was not good and they fell back against the soft shafts of straw. Bill held her close and they waited, both hearts pounding in unison.
