Bill awoke and waited while Laura slept soundly beside him. Bill intended to keep his promise; he was plotting the demise of the ones who had hurt her.
She stirred beside him. Her sleepy green eyes opening and she stretched as if she hadn’t slept in years.
“Good morning,” he whispered softly.
Her eyes found his and she smiled. The weight of her past had shifted and she already looked more at ease as she sat up. “Morning, so what do we do now?”
She was ready to go alright. “I know you’ve been waiting a long time for justice, but we need to do this right.”
Laura sighed, but knew he was right. “Okay…”
The door suddenly opened and Bill instinctively pushed Laura down under the covers.
“Hmpf. Bill!”
She wasn’t sure what was happening, but she heard Bill’s exclamations of ecstasy. She was about to protest when she felt him push her head down.
Is he kidding?
She heard his muffled moans and grunts. “Oh yeah, so good!!”
“Sorry Marshal.” The man mumbled and closed the door.
Bill lifted the blanket and Laura popped up.
“What was that?”
“What? Someone came in and I was protecting you.”
“I see.” Laura raised an eyebrow.
“I didn’t expect you to…”
Stop talking, Bill.
Laura moved toward him practically straddling his leg. He held his breath. “Why Marshal? Don’t you like that sort of thing?”
Not a word, Bill. Or a flinch.
Thankfully, Laura turned and hopped out of bed. Her hair was a mess, sticking out in all directions. She looked quite adorable, Bill thought.
Bill changed the subject and got out of bed. “Can you shoot?”
Laura scoffed incredulously, “Of course I can shoot,” but added under her breath, “sort of.”
Bill chuckled. They had some work to do.
