The first treatment hit me like a ton of bricks. I should’ve been prepared.

My mother hadn’t felt the horrific effects of the diloxan until after her third treatment. I foolishly thought I would be the same.

I looked a mess, not the usual put together, cool and confident President. I’d barely made it to the Admiral’s quarters and the head. It wasn’t pretty. My hair was matted around my face, stuck with sweat and spit. My blouse was damp and my skirt disheveled. I had ripped a new slit in the side.

I looked slightly worse than I felt. I sagged to the floor and put my head back against the wall. I sighed with some relief.

I suddenly heard someone outside the door. It was Bill.

Frak! What is he doing here?

“Laura?” Only one word but I could hear all his concern and emotion packed tightly into it.

“I’m fine," I answered weakly squeezing sound through my lips.

Don’t ask to come in, Bill.

“Can I come in?”

I didn’t want him to see me so weak and pathetic.

Not hearing an answer, in he came. I looked up at him apologetically, but he smiled like everything was fine. He handed me a glass of water.

He got a wet cloth and then gingerly sat beside me. As he hit the floor I heard the familiar rip as his trousers let go.

“Ooops,” was all he said as he turned to me and started to wash my face.

What was I going to do with this man?

I started to giggle.

“Laura, stop squirming around.” He started to chuckle himself. “I hope Jaffee can sew.”

“Me too.” He tossed the cloth into the sink and I put my head on his shoulder.

“Thank you Bill.”

“Anytime Laura.”
