The room was dark. Laura could barely make out his shadow slumped at the desk.
His ship was torn and pounded into a thousand pieces, just like his heart.
He might not want her here, but it was where she needed to be.
He’d lost his daughter. One more anguish for him to endure. One more wrong she could never make right, but this she could do for him.
She saw his head tilt slightly. He knew she was there.
He took a long drink, hoping that would push her away.
She came up behind him and touched his shoulder. He shrugged her off, letting out a deep breath that trailed into a quiet anguished whisper.
She wasn’t deterred and touched him more purposefully; he finally acquiesced and rested back against her.
She could feel the pain seeping out of him, bit by bit. She’d take it all from him if she could.
She felt him waver between pushing her away and crushing her close. She held him tighter, her fingers caressing him tenderly.
“I’m here,” she whispered to him.
She felt him break, suddenly sobbing uncontrollably. Crying for Kara, crying for Zak, crying for the lives they’d never lead.
“It’s no good to keep it in. I know all about that.” She wasn’t sure how long he cried.
She held him until he stilled, then took him by the hand and led him to his rack.
She helped him in, touched his damp cheek and pressed a kiss to his forehead.
She picked up the book he’d been reading and opened it up. Her voice was soft and quiet, melting into and becoming one with the steady hum of Galactica.
Their voices together finally settled him.
Laura sat by his side and was there when he woke in the morning.
