Tom Zarek.
The name brought me many thoughts.
Terrorist.
Politician.
Friend.
I had to admit he’d made my extended stay on New Caprica better. We’d become closer over the last few months.
I was lonely and it had been so long since Bill had visited. Without the Presidency holding me tightly I could admit how much I missed him and his companionship.
Tom was there ready to help. He was becoming more and more attentive. I had to admit it was nice, but I realized he was moving toward something more.
He was soon dropping in at the school to see me, chatting with the students and oohing and ahhing over their artwork. I knew what he was doing. He was trying to win me over so I’d invite him to my tent.
One day he casually let me know he’d been drying some herbs to make tea. I let down my guard and asked him over later that night.
Later, as the evening progressed he told me he could help soothe my headache and he started to rub my shoulders.
I tried to enjoy it. I tried not to imagine it was other hands touching me. Another’s voice soothing me with poetry and quotes from books he’d read long ago.
But he wasn’t Bill.
I got up and told him I was tired and thanked him for the tea. He was disappointed I could tell, but he wasn’t the man I wanted or needed.
He left and I got ready for bed.
Abstinence, my old friend, would be my companion. I would wait until Bill came to his senses.
I closed my eyes and thoughts of blue eyes, strong arms and a husky voice filled my mind and heart as I drifted off to sleep.
Soon Bill, soon.
