The previous chapter can be found here Biscotti Bill. Thanks to defyingnormalcy for her beta!! I cheated and posted the next chapter as well since I didn't want to break up this sequence!! :)

Laura came out of the bathroom. Bill called it “the head”. She giggled. She wandered around examining the stacks of books and various treasures he’d collected; all things that made Bill who he was. She didn’t have to guess, she knew.

She didn’t deserve him.

She looked at the photo of him with his children and shuddered. She should have been at the memorial today, not playing pat-a-cake with Bill Adama.

What is wrong with me?

She pushed away the guilt from her mind and heart.

She didn’t want to face it today, or any day. It was like an anchor around her neck pulling her down again and again.

You can’t escape it Laura.

Bill never asked about her life. He seemed content to float along day after day in their little café, never facing what needed to be faced.

She noticed his tiny cot in the corner. She went and sat for a moment.

How does he sleep on this tiny thing?

She was suddenly exhausted, barely able to keep her eyes open. She put her head down just for a second. That was all it took before she was facing a myriad of café dreams and distant nightmares.

The words rang through her mind. She had held them off long enough today.

Your family was killed by a drunk driver.

The fountain was cold.

Numbing.

Cold enough to freeze her heart for anyone else.

Even Bill?

She was back in her old house. The wrapping paper from the shower was still strewn all over. She couldn’t wait for the baby.

Wait.

The baby was dead like her family.

A noise made her turn.

Bill?

Laura was confused.

What was he doing here?

“Let me help you Laura. You should change out of these wet clothes. You’re freezing.”

“I’m here with you Laura.” Bill came closer touching her cheek and brushing back her hair.

She felt dizzy like she was floating away. Bill put his arms around her to steady her. She looked up into his blue eyes full of compassion, kindness and something else she wasn’t ready to give a name to.

She was dreaming.

“You’re not alone this time.”

He felt so real.

She clung to him, his solid body so strong and sure; her nails digging into his arms so he wouldn’t disappear.

Her body started to shake.

The anger.

The pain.

The hopelessness.

The loss.

No one was left.

She was falling.

Hot tears drenched her cheeks and violent sobs racked her body. Bill held on tight as they ended up on the floor. He cradled her against him, holding her close, rubbing her back and talking to her softly.

Minutes or hours passed, they were in her bedroom. He gently removed her wet clothes and ran a hot shower.

She didn’t argue when he stripped down himself, helped her in and then stepped in behind her. He held her against him, his arms folding around her as the pain seeped out of her and vanished down the drain.

Soon she was in her bed. Bill’s ever present bulk was wrapped around her small frame, keeping her safe from the outside world’s attempts to claw and tear at her soul.

Bill was reading. It was her favourite book. His husky voice was full of tenderness.

And love.

Laura opened her eyes.

She wasn’t alone and the cot wasn’t all that tiny.

Bill was snuggled behind her, comforting her with his words and his hands. She felt soft kisses against her shoulder and neck.

She felt peace for the first time in a long time.
