This had turned into a very bad idea.
Laura accepted her military adviser’s invitation to his father’s birthday party, thinking it would be an excellent opportunity to get to know the Adamas better. Richard had always said you learn more about people in their homes than you do in the office.
She’s learned that William Adama did not like birthdays. His face constricted when he’d strode in and everyone called out surprise! His left nostril twitched when he saw the pile of presents. His shoulders hunched at the sight of the cake.
Lee, confused at first, settled into petulance. Kara tried to make nice with no success. Saul just drank.
Laura approaches Adama. “Lovely party.”
“No it’s not. I apologize that you had to be here. Lee should have known.”
Laura’s gaze darts to Lee. “I’m sure Apollo just wanted you to have a fun birthday.”
“We never do my birthday. His mother should have told him why.”
“You can’t tell him?”
Adama’s sullen mug becomes as petulant as his son’s. “It’s not important.”
“Seems like it’s pretty important to you. To behave this way with a room full of well-wishers.”
He studies her with those startling blue eyes. “I’m having a ball,” he deadpans.
“You need the sort of birthday present that’ll make you want your birthday every day.” She blushes; her casual comeback somehow sounds flirtatious.
That intense gaze slowly slides along her body, discretely lingering at her décolleté. “And what present would that be?”
She frantically looks around. “A new book?”
He smiles gently. “Thank you, Madam President. I will look forward to the next birthday.” He gives Lee a tight smile and nods.
She should keep her mouth shut. But Laura has a bad habit of always wanting the last word. “My birthday’s in four months.”
