“Go to bed, Admiral.”

Bill made a non-committal noise from his place by Laura’s cot.

“You can’t stay here all night,” Cottle continued gruffly. He rummaged in his pockets for his lighter and a cigarette.

Silence.

He flicked the lighter a couple of times. The thin paper caught, and he took a long drag.

“She’s not going anywhere tonight, ” he added, slightly more gently.

More silence.

Finally Bill responded, his voice barely audible over the hums and beeps of the machines littering the room.

“I need more time.”

Cottle grumbled under his breath and went to retrieve a new pack of cigarettes.

Three cigarettes later, Bill was still right where the doctor had left him.

“Come on Bill, time’s up.”

“Jack I-“

“You’re not helping anyone right now,” Cottle interrupted. “Not me, not yourself, not her. Go to bed, Bill. That’s an order.”

“I’m your commanding officer.”

“Yeah, and I’m your doctor and I’m telling you to get yourself some shut eye.”

Bill’s footsteps echoed as he made his way to the hatch. When turned back for one last look, all he could see were the lights of the machines and the soft red glow of a cigarette.
